Q: Is exposing this secret harmful to the immigrant
worker?
The overall aim of our campaign is to
protect the immigrant worker by exposing their exploitation, ensuring their job
security and safety and properly place the responsibility on the unscrupulous
parties to this form of modern day slavery.
Many immigrant workers depend on their job
for the money to support their families here and abroad. To this end many
undocumented workers fall prey to misclassification because it allows them to
keep working.
Many construction workers employed by
contractors receive $3-$7 more on average than their misclassified counterparts.
Unfortunately many immigrant workers who
are misclassified do not see this disparity of pay or it's long term
consequences (for not paying their individual taxes, etc.) as exploitation.
Rather, misclassified immigrant workers are forced to sign a contract not in
their own language and without an understanding of all the implications and
consequences farther down the road.
