Q:  Is there a solution?

Campaign to support accountability in the employment of Independent (1099) Subcontractors

Misclassifying workers as independent (1099) subcontractors especially targets a vulnerable population of immigrant workers and cheats:

bulletHonest employers of their ability to compete fairly on job bids, cheats them of a pool of qualified workers and to maintain high standards on the jobsite.
bulletCommunity out of taxes, stabilizing reasonable health care costs, and the pride of knowing that decent and fair standards were employed in building public and private projects.
bulletWorkers who are misclassified out of competitive wages, overtime pay, workman's compensation, health insurance, unemployment insurance and social security benefits.
bulletLegal 1099 contractors and other workers out of employment opportunities, higher health and safety standards, competitive wages and lower insurance premiums.

Therefore, we support:

bulletLegislative reform to close the loopholes that allow this exploitation
bulletLegal action against the unscrupulous employers
bulletAccountability to the community that ensures compliance with proper employment practices and laws, and to ensure justice for the abused workers.

An increasing number of towns and municipalities throughout the nation are passing 'Responsible Employer Ordinances'.  Please write or call your elected officials and tell them you want these worker protections and company accountability (outlined above) passed where you live.
