Q: As owners or managers why should we care?

When you sign a contract with a General Contractor (GC) or a
Construction Manager (CM) you may be unaware that it hires subcontractors who
misclassify its workers, but ignorance is no excuse for allowing the law to be
broken on your premises. By not having researched the practices of your
GC/CM and its Subcontractors, Owners may open themselves to financial
liabilities and risk intense scrutiny by the public and media. If, on the
other hand, you knowingly allow a contractor to engage in fraud in the
construction/renovation of your project, you are subsidizing potentially illegal
conduct and could be benefiting from savings made by a criminal offense.
"The misclassification of workers is a
fleecing of the state and negatively impacts all interested parties.
Our community should be outraged at the blatant cheating of the greedy
companies who abuse workers by inviting them to build, but refusing them
the benefits they are entitled to. We, therefore, call for a new
revolution of justice for immigrant workers and a legislative solution
to this problem."
