SUTHERLAND LUMBER
Sutherland
Lumber
makes its way in this community serving the construction industry.
Construction is a key component of the area economy and its vitality
has helped keep the recent recession from being worse.
The
Carpenters’ District Council of Kansas City and Vicinity is made up
of men and women who also make their living in the construction
industry. For a century our Union has worked to help us that make a
decent living in this industry, and to be contributing participants
in the area economy. We raise our children here, pay taxes here and
support area merchants.
When
Sutherland Lumber recently undertook a construction project
of its own, however, it elected to hire, Luke Draily Construction
Company, Inc., a non-union contractor whose niche in the
marketplace is based upon paying employees wages and benefits well
below those established by the Carpenters’ District Council through
collective bargaining with the fair contractors of our community.
Thus, Luke Draily Construction Company, Inc. and Sutherland
Lumber undermine the area economy by driving down the wages of
working people, like us.
The
economy of the Kansas City area is based upon the wages of its
citizens, and their purchasing power. If wages are undermined then
the whole structure of our area economy is depressed and comes
tumbling down. If Sutherland Lumber wants to be a part of
this community then it needs to support area standards. Just like a
house built with rotten lumber, an economy with a weakened wage
structure will soon come tumbling down.
